Attendance at Millfields Primary School

At Millfields, we recognise the importance of good attendance and the impact it has on children’s progress, attainment, enjoyment of learning and relationships within school. Good attendance helps a child to realise their potential.

Everyone associated with the school including teachers, children, governors and parents are encouraged to work in partnership to create a culture which promotes and values good attendance. Good attendance is promoted via our policy and prospectus; it is recognised and rewarded as an achievement.

The school monitors attendance and ensures quick and early intervention if a problem is identified.

A child must attend school on time on each and every day that they are required to do so unless an exceptional circumstance arises.

Attend, Enjoy Counts

Our A-Z of School Attendance: A Guide for Parents/Carers

A Appointments - Please try to arrange appointments for after school, but if it is in school time, please bring your appointment card to the school office.

B Being Bullied - Please don't keep your child off school, there are many people who are trained at school and who want to help.

C Casual Absence - Some children are being kept off school when they don't need to be, for example, to go shopping for birthday treats or pretend sickness, non-attendance is monitored by the Attendance Officer.

D Dinner Money - Please ensure your child's lunch account on Parentmail is in credit.

E Encourage - Encourage your child to take part in out-of-school clubs, it allows them to experience new activities and meet new friends.

F Friendships - Friendships at school can stay with your child for the rest of their life, days off school make it harder for your child to fit back in to friendship groups.

G Good Attendance - This is the secret to your child's success -we aim for attendance above 95%

H Happy Times - School days can be the best time of your child's life, don't let them miss out.

I INSET - These are teacher training days, your child is not at school on these days, please check our website calendar as not all schools have the same INSET days, so don't assume they will be the same as an older sibling.

J Jump For Joy - Celebrate your child's attendance achievements when they are rewarded for good attendance at school.

K Keep Fit - A healthy lifestyle means a healthy mind. A nutritious breakfast will give your child the energy they need for the rest of the day.

L Lateness - Being late disrupts teaching, lessons begin at 8.55 am - your child will be embarrassed when they arrive late to class.

M Missed Minutes - as little as 15 minutes late each day is equal to two weeks lost learning over an academic year.

N New Starters - It is important to get children into good patterns of attendance from an early age so this can carry on with them into later life.

O Opportunities - It is not all Maths, English and Science - School is about learning how to be good citizens and treating others with respect. Children can be part of many trips, clubs, groups and teams.

P Praise - Always look for the positives and not the negatives, have a system at home to reward good behaviour.

Q Question - Ask your child what their class attendance was this week?

R Ring - Please ring school if your child is going to be absent or late by 9 .15am.

S SATS - These are very important tests which your child will sit, absence during these times will put your child at a disadvantage.

T Term Time Holidays - Children are out of school 175 days of the year, so there are plenty of days to take a holiday. Holidays taken in term time can cause your child to fall behind with their work.

U Unauthorised Absence - This means that we will not authorise the time your child has been absent from school, for example, holidays in term time, or absence from school with no explanation. This will affect their overall attendance percentage.

V Volunteer - Help any parents you think may be struggling to get their child to school on time.

W Website - Please check our website for information on diary dates, holidays and INSET days.

X XXX - Show your child love and encouragement by asking them about their school day.

Y You - You are legally responsible for ensuring your child attends school. Your child will thank you one day for encouraging them to attend and achieve their goals.

Z Zzzz - Early bedtimes make for early mornings and a better start to the school day.

Be in the line for 5 to 9!
